We have been wanting to paint our master bedroom basically since we moved in. When building this house the previous owners decided to paint the ceilings and walls all the same tan color. We’re not sure exactly what color it is, but if I had to guess I’d say Sherwin Williams Natural Tan. It was too yellow and way too dark for us. Especially to be on the ceilings.
We knew we wanted to do an accent wall, but we weren’t sure what kind of accent wall. Our master has “sort of” vaulted ceilings. I say “sort of” because the top doesn’t come to a point, but instead a flat rectangular space on the ceiling. (it is hard to describe in words, so look at the pics to see what I mean.) This made it really difficult to find inspiration photos on Pinterest of accent walls that looked like ours.
As some of you may know, I am not a fan of horizontal shiplap. 🤷🏻♀️ It just doesn’t really match my vibe, thats really the only explanation I have lol. I do like vertical shiplap though (I’m weird, don’t judge), but I didn’t think shiplap would look good on this wall. I wanted something to accentuate the vault and still match the style of the rest of the house. We finally decided on this board and batten that outlined the vault and its honestly so perfect.
We sampled a few different colors before landing on one, but we ended up choosing Dovetail by Sherwin Williams. It’s a beautiful, warm grey. Not too light for an accent wall, but not too dark that it closes in the space. The rest of the room is Eider White by Sherwin Williams and that is what we have on the walls throughout the rest of the house. When picking paint colors, we want to love the colors, but we also want future buyers to love the colors too and not be frightened by each room being a different color.
What You’ll Need :
- 1 x 3 Primed MDF Boards (vertical & framing pieces)
- 1 x 4 Primed MDF Boards (horizontal piece)
- LiquidNails
- Finishing Nail Gun + Finishing Nails
- Wood Putty
- Caulk
- Paint
What To Do:
- Measure out the spaces between your battens
- The math we did
- Length of wall / Approximate spacing between each batten = Number of spaces
- Number of spaces + 1 = Number of battens
- Width of battens x Number of battens = Total width of all battens
- Length of wall – Width of all battens = remaining length of wall
- Remaining length of wall / Number of Spaces = Spacing between each batten
- The math we did
- Cut framing boards to size and cut angles needed
- Attach framing pieces first
- We used LiquidNails AND finishing nails to attach the boards to the wall. You need the LiquidNails because there is not guarantee that you will hit a stud on every batten that you nail in. The LiquidNails will be what holds the boards up and the nails will act as clamps until the LiquidNails dries.
- Attach your horizontal board
- Attach battens
- Wood putty nail holes
- Sand putty
- Caulk the seams between the boards and wall
- Paint! 👩🏻🎨
DIY Video : Master Bedroom Accent Wall
We are so in love with how the accent wall in our room turned out! It is crazy to see how this room has transformed thanks to a little TLC and paint. We didn’t realize how dark the previous color made this room until we started getting Eider White on the walls. If you have the same vault as us in your master I hope this might give you some inspo for your accent wall!
Let me know what you think!
Always,
