When we bought our sectional + ottoman I had no idea how much I would miss having a coffee table. Not only did I miss having another surface to style (of course 🤗), we both missed having a hard surface to put drinks + snacks on while we watch TV. Every movie or tv-series-binge night was a balancing act of trying to hold all our snacks & beverages or trying to fit it all on the tiny tray I had placed in the middle of the ottoman.
We tossed around the idea of going back to having a coffee table, but we just couldn’t part with our big comfy ottoman and a spot to prop up our feet.
At a hotel a few months ago, we saw an over-the-ottoman coffee table in the lobby and thought it would be the perfect solution. This DIY was one of the easier projects we’ve tackled but had a HUGE impact on our day-to-day. Now we have the best of both worlds 🌎
Materials Used :
- Sanded Red Oak Plywood
- Edgebanding
- Edgebanding Trimmer
- Varathane’s Poly + Stain in Black
- Wood Glue
- Wood Putty
- Flathead Phillips 1.5 inch screws
What to do :
- First, you will want to measure your existing ottoman to see what dimension you need for your table to fit over it.
- Our measurements :
- 18 inches wide
- 54.5 inches long
- 20.5 inches tall
- Our measurements :
- Then cut your wood to size. You should end up with 3 pieces; a top & 2 legs.
- We used a CounterSink drill bit to create 3 holes on each side of the top where we would screw the top into each leg. This allows the screw heads to sit below the surface of the wood and be filled more easily with wood putty.
- Then pre-drill holes into the legs where each screw would be installed to prevent the wood from splitting
- You will want to glue and then fasten the legs to the top.
- Fill the holes with wood putty
- Install edgebanding with an iron
- Trim excess edge banding
- Sand wood putty and edge banding
- Stain the table to your desired color + seal ( we used a poly + stain so this was only one step for us, but you can buy separate stain and poly)
Always,
