When we found the IKEA shoe cabinets and decided to build 2 as 1, I knew that an accent wall would be perfect for this space. I’m not the biggest fan of traditional horizontal shiplap, but I do love the modern/mid-century flare that vertical shiplap adds to a space. I also really wanted to make this small hallway feel taller, not longer, and I knew that vertical shiplap would do just that.
If you’ve ever priced out buying real shiplap, you will know that it’s not cheap. It wouldn’t have been that expensive to do this one wall with real shiplap, but we are always trying to save wherever we can so we ended up researching alternative options. We ended up landing on using 5.00 mm 4×8 underlayment board. We had Home Depot cut it into 5-inch x 60-inch strips for us and used that as our shiplap.
Once all the shiplap pieces were cut, we stacked them and clamped them together to sand and paint the edges. We let the stack dry and then we were ready to attach them to the wall.
We used 1/8 tile spacers to keep all the boards evenly spaced. We attached them to the wall with Liquid Nails and finishing nails.
Then we attached the top framing piece. We used 2 1 x 3 primed MDF boards for this.
Once all the boards are attached all that’s left to do is wood putty the nail holes, caulk the seams, and then paint!
We painted the accent wall a creamy white, Snowbound by Sherwin Williams.
