In early May, we hosted our first overnight guests. In preparation a few weeks prior, we decided to spruce up our guest bathroom. We painted, swapped out the globes of the light fixture, and did a quick accent wall.
We wanted to keep it very affordable so no major remodel here. Just some quick changes to give the bathroom some character and make it feel cozy. Everything we did was super budget-friendly!
This accent wall was super simple and very affordable. The secret for the easiest board & batten ever?
LATTICE BOARDS
For the accent wall, I did not want the battens to hang over the baseboards and I really did not want to replace the baseboards like we did in Andrew’s office and I did not want Andrew to have to cut strips out of underlayment board. Enter lattice boards. It was super easy to work with and since it is purchased by the foot we were able to cut exactly what we needed at Home Depot so when we got home all we had to do was LiquidNail & nail the boards in place. For the horizontal top piece, we used a piece of lattice and then 2 square dowels on top. The dowels were the perfect thickness and created the ledge at the top that I was looking for.
What You’ll Need :
- Primed Lattice Boards
- Square Dowels
- Finishing Nails
- Liquid Nails
- Caulk
- Wood Putty
- Paint
What to do :
- Measure out the spaces between your battens
- The math we did
- Length of wall / Approximate spacing between each batten = Number of spaces
- Number of spaces + 1 = Number of battens
- Width of battens x Number of battens = Total width of all battens
- Length of wall – Width of all battens = remaining length of wall
- Remaining length of wall / Number of Spaces = Spacing between each batten
- The math we did
- Cut battens to size
- Attach battens
- We used LiquidNails AND finishing nails to attach the boards to the wall. You need the LiquidNails because there is no guarantee that you will hit a stud on every batten that you nail in. The LiquidNails will be what holds the boards up and the nails will act as clamps until the LiquidNails dries.
- Wood putty the nail holes
- Sand putty
- Caulk the seams between the boards and wall
- Paint! 👩🏻🎨
We painted the board and batten Repose Gray by Sherwin Williams and the rest of the bathroom Snowbound by Sherwin Williams. We used Satin finishes in Sherwin Williams’ Duration line.
After the painting was done, all that was left to do was add some towel hooks, some floating shelves, and decor. 😊
We absolutely love these floating shelves from Amazon! I was VERY nervous about ordering shelves off of Amazon. I think I read at least a gazillion reviews on a bunch of different ones before pulling the trigger on these, but I am SO glad that I did. They were under $50, real wood, came with quality mounting hardware, and an easy to follow mounting template.
This quick refresh is exactly what the bathroom needed! Every time I walk by now I want to start working on our Master bath. 🙈
Always,

You fous did an amazing job. What was the total price for this makeover?
Andreanna says
Thank you, Davern! It’s hard for me to give an exact dollar amount because we had a lot of the materials already on hand. We used a sample size of paint from Sherwin Williams in Repose Gray. The Lattice at the time was 99 cents per linear foot. We maybe spent $30 on the lattice. The two square dowels cost us $7.The towel hooks were the most expensive and came in 2-packs for $25 and we bought 2 packs. We had painting supplies, Liquid Nails, wood putty, caulk & the finishing nails/nail gun already from previous projects. So I’d say we spent $90 on the accent wall excluding those items. I hope that helps some!

Sorry for my ignorance… can you explain what exactly you did with the wooden square dowels? I LOVE this look and plan to do it myself in our guest bathroom – but I’m a little lost on that step. (DIY newbie here, lol)

What size battens did you use for vertical and horizontal trim?? Love the look!!

How high from the ground is your board and batten?
Wendy says
What was the height you ended up using for the board and batten wall? Looks great!
